How to run a sub 2:45 marathon NBRO style

I was recently, thanks to Nike Running Denmark, in Berlin to run the 39th edition of the Berlin BMW marathon. Of course I only went because a big group of NBRO runners participated, as this is the main reason why I run at all – the social interaction with likeminded people.

This was my third marathon and also the one for which I had trained the least according to my Nike+ account; actually I don’t know if you can even call this Marathon practice?

But as AI said: “We talkin’ ‘bout practice man”

But the Berlin vibe was good in great thanks to Nike Stadium Berlin, so I still set out to improve my PB of 2:57:38.

I have always felt that you can do anything when you believe in yourself and you are feeling happy and laugh a lot, and that the power from these jolly moments can be transferred onto other things in life. In our crew we call this the NBRO factor. I had plenty of laughs travelling 8 hours in a bus with NBRO, topped off Saturday night at around 10:30 PM when Jamil comes bursting into our room with a haircut gone wrong because the trimmer he borrowed ran out of power.

Thomsen, Fashion, Morten and I laughed so hard we had tears coming down our chins and I knew right there, that it would be a great run.

And it was, pacing and rhythm was good from the start and I even chatted a bit along the route with a couple of other runners, so I felt great. I could however start to feel a bit of a cramp coming along around 35 K, but NBRO was there for the rescue with cheers and confetti canon, so I kept going.

The cramps came on real bad at 40 K and followed me to the finish line, but out of the blue my brother shows up with about 1 K to go and ran a short way alongside me, and that really convinced me I could finish. I did so running backwards in the time of 2:44:47, almost 13 minutes off my PB.

This just goes to show that with the right people around you and NBRO crew love in your heart, you can do anything! –even party till 4 am on VERY stiff legs.

Thank you NBRO!!
